Who is Jane Hedengren?
Jane Hedengren is a track and field athlete for BYU from Provo, Utah. 2026 Big 12 XC champion (6K, 19:28.0); NCAA records: 10,000m 30:46.80, indoor 5,000m 14:44.79; 2026 NCAA indoor 3,000m and 5,000m champion
Provo's distance runner
Hedengren is from Provo and stayed home for college. BYU's 2026 roster lists her as a 5-foot-9 sophomore from Provo and a Timpview High School graduate, and it notes a family thread through the program: her brother Isaac runs for BYU's men's track and cross country team, and her uncle, Alan Hedengren, also ran for BYU. Her parents are John and Sarah Hedengren.
At Timpview she broke nine national high school records, from the mile to the 5,000 meters. She won the 2024 Nike Cross Nationals girls' race in a course-record 16:32.7, and in April 2025 she ran 14:57.93 for 5,000 meters, the first high school athlete under 15 minutes. She finished high school as the 2025 Gatorade Female Athlete of the Year.
The record at BYU
Her freshman cross country season under coach Diljeet Taylor ended with a Big 12 title in a championship course-record 18:29.60, Big 12 Runner of the Year and Newcomer of the Year honors, and second place at the 2025 NCAA Championships in 18:38.9 behind Alabama's Doris Lemngole. On Dec. 6, 2025, she ran 14:44.79 indoors for 5,000 meters, a collegiate record.
In March 2026 she won the NCAA indoor 5,000 meters in 15:00.12 and the 3,000 meters in 8:36.61 a day later, the first BYU woman to win two individual titles at one NCAA championship. Outdoors she ran 30:46.80 at the Stanford Invitational in her first 10,000 meters, an NCAA record, then finished third in the 10,000 and ninth in the 5,000 at the NCAA outdoor championships in June.
Her 2026 cross country season
She opened her sophomore season by winning the UVU Invitational 3-mile in 15:08.62, a Scera Park course record by BYU's account, which earned her USTFCCCA National Women's Athlete of the Week and Big 12 Co-Runner of the Week. She was third at the Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater on Sept. 26 and did not race at Pre-Nationals. Back on the Stillwater course on Oct. 31, she won the Big 12 title in 19:28.0, 10 seconds clear of Oklahoma State's Billah Jepkirui, and led BYU women's cross country to its fourth straight conference team title.
