Former BYU star Conner Mantz, the American marathon record holder, finished 11th at the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026, in 2:07:27. It was his first marathon since he set that record in Chicago in October 2025, and he was in front of the field at the 35-kilometer checkpoint before Sweden's Andreas Almgren pulled away late to win in 2:06:01 in his marathon debut.
Mantz's time was 93 seconds faster than the 2:09:00 he ran in his New York debut in 2024, when he finished sixth. New York Road Runners said four American men placed in the top 11 on Sunday, "running the four fastest times ever by American men in New York," and Mantz was one of the four.
How did Conner Mantz do at the 2026 New York City Marathon?
Mantz placed 11th overall in 2:07:27, according to the NYRR race recap, and fourth among the American men. FloTrack's race report describes a lead group that stayed tightly packed for much of the 26.2 miles. Kenya's Geoffrey Kamworor, a two-time New York champion, led at 30K, and then, in FloTrack's words, "American record holder Conner Mantz moved ahead at 35K."
That put a Utah-trained runner at the front of the New York City Marathon with a little more than seven kilometers to go, in his first race at the distance since the stress fractures that kept him out of Boston. Almgren surged into the lead by 40K and reached that checkpoint in 2:00:00, with Kenya's Benson Kipruto and Italy's Yemaneberhan Crippa less than two seconds behind, before pulling away over the final 2.2 kilometers. Mantz finished 86 seconds behind the winner.
Who won the 2026 New York City Marathon men's race?
Andreas Almgren of Sweden, in 2:06:01. NYRR described him as the recently crowned 2026 World Athletics Half Marathon champion and the 2026 European champion at 10,000 meters, and said he stayed with the lead pack through the first 25 miles before making his decisive move with one mile to go. He became the first open-division man to win in his marathon debut since Gebre Gebremariam in 2010.
Crippa was second in 2:06:14. Kamohelo Mofolo of Lesotho was third in 2:06:26 and, per NYRR, celebrated his 21st birthday by becoming the first athlete from his country to finish on the podium. The top 10, from FloTrack's results:
- Andreas Almgren (Sweden), 2:06:01
- Yemaneberhan Crippa (Italy), 2:06:14
- Kamohelo Mofolo (Lesotho), 2:06:26
- Benson Kipruto (Kenya), 2:06:27
- Haftu Strintzos (Australia), 2:06:34
- Zouhair Talbi (USA), 2:06:43
- Ahmed Muhumed (USA), 2:07:08
- Geoffrey Kamworor (Kenya), 2:07:09
- Ryota Kondo (Japan), 2:07:09
- Ryan Ford (USA), 2:07:17
NYRR's official recap places Muhumed eighth in 2:07:09, one place and one second behind FloTrack's order.
Who was the top American man in New York?
Zouhair Talbi, sixth overall in 2:06:43. NYRR noted he was also the top American at the 2026 Boston Marathon. Muhumed ran his marathon debut, Ford was 10th in 2:07:17 and Mantz followed in 2:07:27, completing what NYRR called "one of the strongest American fields ever assembled."
Utah had a second runner in that American group. Aidan Troutner, another former BYU runner listed from Provo in NYRR's professional field, ran 2:08:54 and was the fifth American man in World-Track's U.S. results. That is well under the 2:10:23 listed beside his name in the field. Troutner made his professional marathon debut in Chicago in October 2025, finishing 18th, and BYU credits him as one of the runners who helped the Cougars win the 2024 NCAA cross country national championship.
What has Conner Mantz done since BYU?
Mantz won two NCAA cross country titles at BYU, according to NYRR, and BYU says he graduated in 2021 after taking first overall at that year's NCAA championship. BYU reported in 2025 that he is coached by Ed Eyestone, the Cougars' head cross country and track and field coach, and NYRR's professional field lists him from Provo, Utah.
His professional résumé since then:
- 2024 Olympic marathon: eighth, with former BYU teammate Clayton Young ninth, 32 seconds apart, per the Deseret News.
- 2024 New York City Marathon: sixth in 2:09:00, the top American in his New York debut; Young was seventh in 2:09:21.
- 2025 Houston Half Marathon: 59:17, an American record, per NYRR.
- 2025 Chicago Marathon: fourth in 2:04:43, an American record. BYU reported that it broke the 2:05:48 Khalid Khannouchi ran in 2002, and NYRR said the old mark had stood for 23 years.
Stress fractures then kept him out of the Boston Marathon, and NYRR billed Sunday as his return to New York for his first marathon since Chicago. Two days before the race, he sat down at the TCS New York City Marathon Expo for NYRR's "Set the Pace" podcast to walk listeners through the course mile by mile. On race day he ran 2:07:27, the fastest of his two marathons in New York.
Was Clayton Young in the 2026 New York City Marathon?
No. Young, Mantz's former BYU teammate and fellow 2024 Olympian, is not listed in NYRR's men's professional field. He worked the race on television instead: ESPN and ABC7/WABC-TV named Olympians Carrie Tollefson and Clayton Young, with Paralympians Kurt Fearnley and Amanda McGrory, to their broadcast team, and said Young would "cover the race leaders along the course." At 35K, the race leader was his former teammate.
Young has done this before. BYU noted that he provided color commentary alongside Eyestone at the 2025 Chicago Marathon, the race where Mantz set the American record. The Deseret News describes Mantz and Young as "both former BYU national collegiate champions and 2024 Olympians."
