SLCC Volleyball Opens 2-1 at the Battle at the Beach

SLCC women's volleyball opened its 2026 season more than 2,000 miles from Taylorsville and came home with a winning weekend. At the Battle at the Beach in Fort Myers, Florida, the Bruins went 2-1 across three matches on August 21-22: a straight-set win over Polk State College, a four-set win over Florida Southwestern State, and a five-set loss to Daytona State College that went the full distance.

For a program that finished last season inside the national top eight, a 2-1 start against a Florida junior-college field is a workmanlike opening — two wins banked before a marathon fifth set finally went the other way.

Two wins to start, then a five-set finish

The Bruins opened Friday, August 21, by sweeping Polk State College 3-0, then returned later that day to beat Florida Southwestern State 3-1. Two matches, two wins, and only one dropped set between them — exactly the kind of clean first day a veteran program wants on a neutral floor.

Saturday, August 22, brought the weekend's toughest test. SLCC and Daytona State College traded sets into a decisive fifth, and Daytona State came out on top 3-2 to hand the Bruins their first loss of the year. A five-set opening-weekend defeat stings less than most: it means SLCC was a set away from a 3-0 start against unfamiliar competition far from home.

The setting made the test a real one. Hosted by Florida Southwestern State, the Battle at the Beach in Fort Myers draws national junior-college programs from across the country — the kind of neutral-site field where a Utah team gets no travel-weary opponents and no home whistle. Beating two of those programs and pushing a third to five sets, more than 2,000 miles from Taylorsville, is a stiffer opening slate than most teams schedule for Week 1. Five-set matches are also their own kind of information: they reveal a roster's conditioning, its serving nerve late, and whether it can close, and SLCC will have learned plenty about all three from the Daytona State match even in defeat.

A national-tournament program picks up where it left off

The 2-1 line reads differently when you know where SLCC has been. The Bruins closed 2025 with a 25-4 record, won the Rocky Mountain District A championship with a five-set win over Central Arizona College, earned the No. 7 seed at the NJCAA National Tournament, and finished seventh in the country. This is not a program rebuilding from scratch — it is one that expects to be in Florida-caliber tournaments and expects to win most of what it plays.

Measured against that standard, opening 2-1 on a neutral-site weekend is a reasonable floor, not a red flag. The five-set loss to Daytona State is the sort of early, low-stakes stress test that shows a returning group where its margins are before the results start carrying conference weight.

That rematch with Central Arizona is an early storyline of its own, a chance to see whether the program that ended the Bruins' district can trouble them again on SLCC's home floor.
