Utah college teams produced 11 verified wins across football, soccer and volleyball on Saturday, September 12. The statewide board stretched from Big 12 football wins by Utah and BYU to a ranked junior-college soccer doubleheader in Ephraim, a five-set breakthrough for Utah Valley volleyball and a road shutout by Westminster women's soccer.
Every one of Utah's 11 full-coverage schools had a dated September 12 entry or an explicit gap: BYU, Utah, Utah State, Utah Valley, Weber State, Southern Utah, Utah Tech, Westminster, Salt Lake Community College, Snow College and USU Eastern. Football: Utah and BYU put two wins on the board
Utah beat Arkansas 43-10 in Salt Lake City and moved to 2-0. The Utes supplied the day's widest football margin for a Utah school, holding the Razorbacks to 10 points while clearing 40 for the second straight week.
BYU opened Big 12 play with a 28-17 home win over Arizona. The Cougars also moved to 2-0, and the conference result placed a second gold mark on the state's Football Bowl Subdivision board.
The other five football teams faced road tests. Utah State stayed within one score of No. 19 Washington before falling 16-14 in Seattle. The Aggies trailed 16-7, drove 75 yards for a touchdown, and had already answered an earlier Washington field goal with a 78-yard touchdown catch by Javon Robinson. A two-point road loss to a ranked opponent is not a win, but it was the tightest Utah loss of the day.
Weber State lost 52-21 at Colorado. Quarterback Nate Dahle threw for 244 yards, and Noah Kjar finished with 121 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Utah Tech fell 35-14 at No. 2/3 Montana.
Southern Utah lost 58-24 at Colorado State after briefly turning the game into a contest. The Thunderbirds cut a 24-7 deficit to 24-21 behind two Floyd Chalk touchdown runs. Chalk finished with 144 rushing yards and two scores, Will Burns threw for 233 yards, and Mark Bails Jr. had 138 receiving yards. Colorado State then scored 24 points in the final 3:24 before halftime.
No. 5 Snow College carried a 23-7 halftime lead at Kilgore before losing 35-30. Kilgore's official recap says the Rangers scored 28 points after halftime and overcame six turnovers. Snow completed 25 passes for 260 yards and added three Ian Sanches field goals before a late touchdown pulled the Badgers within five.
Soccer: four wins, including a Snow sweep of USU Eastern
Utah women's soccer delivered the state's biggest soccer score, winning 5-1 at previously unbeaten Long Beach State. It was a five-goal road statement and the first loss of the season for the Beach.
The junior-college doubleheader in Ephraim guaranteed Utah winners, but Snow took both. The Badger women beat USU Eastern 2-1, then the Snow men beat USU Eastern by the same 2-1 score. Both matches were Utah-versus-Utah, so each one produced a Snow win and a USU Eastern loss on the same board.
Westminster split two road and neutral-site soccer matches. The Griffin women won 1-0 at Northwest Nazarene when Ella Kirkham supplied the second-half goal. Westminster's men lost 1-0 to No. 2 Seattle Pacific in Denver, but the official recap shows how close the match stayed: the Griffins outshot the Falcons 8-6 after halftime and held a 3-2 edge in shots on goal for the full match.
Utah Valley women lost 2-1 to San Diego State in Orem. That was the Wolverines' only Saturday soccer final; their men's team played at Marshall on Friday.
Volleyball: five wins and three five-set stories
Utah Valley earned its first win of the season by beating Radford 3-2 at the Kansas City Klassic. The Wolverines had entered the morning 0-7, so the five-set result was the first mark in their win column all season.
Utah Tech completed a two-sweep weekend by beating host UC Irvine 3-0, one day after sweeping San Jose State. The Saturday result moved the Trailblazers to 5-3 and made them the only Utah program to post a Saturday Division I volleyball sweep.
The Bruin Bash in Taylorsville created the busiest Utah volleyball board. SLCC swept Eastern Wyoming 3-0 before losing 3-1 to Trinity Valley. Snow was swept 3-0 by Miami Dade, then answered with a five-set 3-2 win over Odessa. USU Eastern also split, sweeping Eastern Wyoming 3-0 and falling 3-1 to Trinity Valley.
Westminster lost 3-0 to Adams State in Salt Lake City, with set scores of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-19. Southern Utah was swept 3-0 at Washington State. BYU, Utah, Utah State and Weber State played their volleyball matches Friday rather than Saturday.
