McCae Hillstead came back to Logan to start
The headline addition is a returning one. Quarterback McCae Hillstead began his college career at Utah State, transferred to BYU, and then entered the portal again after the 2025 season to return to Logan. Mendenhall named him the starter on April 20, 2026.
"After a thorough evaluation of our quarterback room, it became clear that McCae has earned the opportunity to lead this program," Mendenhall said in the announcement. "Throughout the spring, McCae demonstrated consistency, poise and a command of the offense that aligns with our expectations for that position."
Hillstead's BYU chapter is part of why the move made sense for both sides. Utah State's own announcement records that he spent two seasons at BYU, redshirting in 2024 before appearing in five games in 2025. Returning to the program where he first took college snaps gives him the job outright and gives Utah State a quarterback who already knows the building.
Idaho State is not a soft opener
Utah State drew an FCS opponent for the opener, but not a convenient one. Idaho State arrives under fourth-year head coach Cody Hawkins after a 6-6 season in 2025, and Big Sky preseason projections placed the Bengals in the top half of the league.
Idaho State also brings recognized talent. Three Bengals were named to the 2026 Stats Perform FCS Preseason All-American list, headlined by running back Dason Brooks and wide receiver Chedon James. For a Utah State defense being asked to hold up against Pac-12 offenses starting in October, a competent FCS opponent with All-America skill players is a more useful measuring stick than a walkover would be.
The schedule behind the opener

Utah State travels to Washington on September 12, then to Utah at Rice-Eccles Stadium on September 19, and hosts Troy on September 26.
