Hilary Knight, the U.S. women's hockey forward who shares a home in Salt Lake City with speed skater Brittany Bowe, scored the tying goal with 2:04 left in the third period of the Olympic final against Canada on Feb. 19, 2026, in Milan, and the United States won 2-1 in overtime. Laila Edwards assisted on the goal, and Megan Keller scored the winner, Olympics.com reported.
The goal was Knight's 15th at the Olympics, breaking the U.S. record she had shared with Natalie Darwitz and Katie King, NBC Olympics reported. NBC Olympics called her the all-time leading Olympic goal scorer and the all-time Olympic points leader in U.S. women's hockey history, with 33 points.
"It's awesome to find success at the end of the journey," she told Olympics.com.
A fifth Olympics and a second gold
Milano Cortina was her fifth Winter Olympics, and the gold was her second, after PyeongChang 2018, Olympics.com reported. PWHL Detroit counts five Olympic medals in all, two gold and three silver, across five Games, and Olympics.com noted she has never placed outside the top two in her Olympic career.
She went to Milan as the U.S. captain. Reuters reported that she is the first U.S. ice hockey player to compete in five Olympic Games, and that her late goal in the final sent the game to overtime.
She had said beforehand that these Games would be her last Olympics. "I'm at peace. I just have this feeling that it's time," she said in May 2025, as theScore reported, quoting her interview with USA Today Sports. That decision covered the Olympics only: she is still playing professionally and internationally.
Ten world titles
Her record at the IIHF Women's World Championship is longer still. PWHL Detroit counts 15 World Championship medals, 10 gold and five silver. NBC Olympics reported that her 10 world titles are the most ever by any hockey player, and that she leads the tournament's career goals (67), assists (53) and points (120).
Before the professional game, she won two NCAA titles at Wisconsin, where she remains the Badgers' all-time leader in goals, PWHL Detroit says.
Her home in Salt Lake City
Knight is from Sun Valley, Idaho, as USA Hockey and the PWHL list her. Her Utah tie runs through her home life. Team USA reported in June 2025 that she and Brittany Bowe, the speed skater, "now share a home in Salt Lake City," and quoted Bowe: "This summer, we're both in Salt Lake." NBC Olympics reported during the Games that the couple owns a house in Salt Lake City, where the U.S. speed skating team trains. The same report described her proposal to Bowe in Milan.
Salt Lake City welcomed both of them home. KSL reported in March 2026 that the "Olympic heroes and Salt Lake residents" would be welcomed home at the city's Paralympic watch party at Library Square, and FOX 13 reported that Knight, "Team USA's hockey captain," and Bowe joined Mayor Erin Mendenhall on stage there, at an event celebrating adaptive sports in Utah. That same week she surprised the 100,000th registered player at the Utah Mammoth Ice Facility, FOX 13 reported.
"So the support we have state-by-state, community-by-community, is just outstanding," she said there.
KSL's list of Utah's 2026 Winter Olympians, drawn from the Utah Sports Commission, described her as a Utah resident, and the commission counts her among Team Utah's Olympic champions and among the athletes who competed in a fifth Games.
PWHL Detroit
Knight captained the Seattle Torrent in 2025-26, with 14 points (five goals, nine assists) in 22 games, PWHL Detroit reported. Detroit acquired her by trade from PWHL Las Vegas on June 16, 2026, and on June 25 announced an extension through the 2028-29 season. Across the PWHL she has 54 points (26 goals, 28 assists) in 76 regular-season games, by the same release.
"I can't wait to get to Detroit and start helping build the team's foundation over the next three years," she said in the release.
Detroit's 2026-27 roster lists her as No. 21, a forward who shoots right, with Sun Valley, Idaho, as her hometown.
The 2026-27 season
USA Hockey named her to its 25-player roster for the 2026 IIHF Women's World Championship, in Herning and Esbjerg, Denmark, from Nov. 6 to Nov. 16, 2026, listing her as "Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho/PWHL Detroit)". After the tournament she returns to Detroit for the PWHL season.
She is one of the athletes followed on the Utah 2034 Olympics hub.
