Utah State Lets a Late Lead Slip in 2-2 Home Draw With Michigan

Utah State women's soccer opened its 2026 home schedule with a result that will sting for a while: the Aggies led Michigan 2-1 in the closing minutes at Chuck & Gloria Bell Field on Sunday, August 16, only to concede an equalizer in the final seconds and settle for a 2-2 draw.

Mia Mullenmeister put Utah State on the board with an assist from Kaeda Wilson, and Mia Lopez added the goal that pushed the Aggies in front of the visiting Big Ten side. Michigan answered through Ella Jablinskey and then, decisively, through Ellie Fife, who buried the equalizer with about 10 seconds on the clock. On the final sequence, Campbell Jewell carried the ball toward the left corner and found Fife, whose bouncing shot beat the Utah State goalkeeper as time expired.

Two Aggie goals, then a 10-second collapse

The scoreline flatters Michigan given the run of play. Utah State pushed 16 shots at the Wolverines' goal, nine of them on target, and Michigan goalkeeper Malia Zillman had to make seven saves to keep her team within range. That is a home team that created more than enough to win, which is exactly why the finish lands so hard: a 2-1 lead inside the final minute is a result the Aggies expected to protect.

Instead, the equalizer dropped in as the clock ran out. A draw at home is not a loss, but a point earned this way reads more like two points dropped. The Aggies generated the better chances, led late and still walked off level.

A winless start through two matches

The draw came four days after Utah State opened its season on the road at No. 15 Kansas on August 12, a loss the department confirmed in its own game report, leaving the Aggies without a win through their first two matches of 2026. It is an early, imperfect start for a program carrying real expectations into a new league: Utah State's schedule release framed the season against a recent run of three straight Mountain West Tournament championships, and this fall marks the Aggies' first season competing in the rebuilt Pac-12. That same release built a deliberately demanding nonconference calendar — six 2025 NCAA Tournament opponents and nine teams that finished last season in the top 85 of the RPI — so the schedule will keep testing how quickly the Aggies learn to close.

None of that is decided in mid-August. What the Michigan result does supply is a specific, correctable lesson — closing out a lead — rather than a broad worry about quality. The shot count says the attack is functioning; the final 10 seconds say the game management is not yet airtight.

What's next: Portland, then the Utah run

Utah State stays home before the schedule turns difficult. Portland visits Bell Field on Thursday, August 20 at 7:30 p.m. Mountain Time, the second of three August home dates. The Aggies then leave Logan for two in-state road matches — at Utah Valley on August 24 and at Utah on August 27, both listed for 7 p.m. — before Texas Tech, which the Aggies' schedule release notes finished 2025 at No. 18 in the final United Soccer Coaches Top 25, visits on August 30.

The September calendar keeps Utah schools in frame: Utah Tech comes to Logan on September 3 and BYU on September 10, part of a seven-match nonconference home slate that also includes South Dakota State and Saint Mary's. Utah State says its full Pac-12 schedule will be released later, so no conference opponent or date belongs on the calendar yet. General-admission seating at Bell Field is first come, first served, and fans may bring lawn chairs or blankets for the grass and berm areas; confirm any late kickoff or ticket changes with Utah State Athletics before traveling. Utah State also says 2026-27 women's sports passes — covering soccer, volleyball, gymnastics and women's basketball — are available beginning at $200, and all three of the Aggies' August home dates are listed as general admission.

For a team that entered the year with championship expectations, the immediate assignment is simpler than the standings will eventually be: protect a lead. Portland on August 20 is the next chance to do it.
