Summer Diamond Leads No. 18 Utah State in Goals and Points in Her Senior Season

Twenty-nine seconds into Utah State's trip to Idaho State on September 17, Summer Diamond stepped up to a penalty and scored. Ten minutes and twenty-three seconds later she scored again. The Aggies' staff logged them as the quickest goals in succession in program history.

By full time it was 6-0, and the senior midfielder from Uintah had half of her season's goals from a single afternoon's work. She also had something more durable: a clear hold on the top of Utah State's scoring chart for a team ranked 18th in the country.

The season so far

Diamond has started all ten matches in 2026 and leads the Aggies in both goals and points. Her line reads four goals, two assists, ten points, fifteen shots, nine shots on goal, one game-winner and 446 minutes.

The number worth pausing on is the finishing rate. Diamond is converting .267 of her shots this season. Her rate across her first three seasons was .120. Sixty percent of everything she has hit this season has been on frame. A midfielder who has always created is now also converting at more than double her earlier rate, in her final year.

Ten points through ten matches has already passed her full-season totals from 2023 and 2025, nine in each, with the entire Pac-12 schedule still ahead.

What she has built over four years

The cumulative record is what gives this season its weight. Across 74 appearances and 71 starts, Diamond has 16 goals, nine assists, 41 points and 4,596 minutes for Utah State. Six of those goals have been game-winners, which puts her tied for ninth in the program's history.

The honours have followed. She was United Soccer Coaches All-Pacific Region First Team and All-Mountain West Second Team in 2024, made the Mountain West All-Newcomer Team as a freshman, the conference's All-Tournament Team in 2025, and its preseason watch list in 2024. She was named Mountain West Freshman of the Week twice inside a month in 2023. She captained the side in 2025. She has also been Academic All-Mountain West in both 2024 and 2025, while studying kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise science.

The debut nobody in Logan had seen before

Diamond announced herself immediately. In her first collegiate match she scored twice in the opening half of a 5-1 win over Weber State, becoming the first true freshman in Utah State history to record a brace on her debut.

Later that season she scored the goal that beat No. 1 BYU.

That freshman year set a pattern she has not broken. Diamond has scored against five Utah Division I programs: BYU, Utah, Weber State, Utah Tech and Utah Valley. On September 10 she scored and assisted in the Aggies' 4-0 win over a then-No. 13 BYU side.

Uintah, and the road out of it

Diamond grew up in Uintah, a small town in northern Utah, and played four years at Bonneville High School in Ogden. She scored 27 goals with 18 assists there and was first-team all-state as a sophomore, junior and senior, leading Bonneville to a 16-1 record and a region championship in her final year and to three straight region titles overall.

Outside school she spent six years with club side Utah Avalanche, winning state and region titles in 2022 and reaching the national semi-finals, and was named to the U17 Best XI at that year's US Youth Soccer National Championships. She also ran track, qualifying for the state championships in the 4x100-metre relay. She is listed at five foot two.

The season that ended badly, and the answer to it

Diamond's junior year did not finish the way it should have. She played 90 minutes in the Mountain West Tournament quarter-final and 84 in the semi-final, then scored in the championship match at Boise State. Midway through that game she was injured, and she missed Utah State's NCAA Tournament match entirely. She still made the All-Tournament Team.

Her senior season has been the reply: ten starts from ten matches, a team-leading scoring line, and the best finishing numbers of her career.

The team around her

Utah State is 7-2-1 and ranked No. 18. The Aggies went 4-0 against in-state opposition in 2026, beating Utah Valley 1-0, Utah 1-0, Utah Tech 8-1 and BYU 4-0, and they have won their last three by a combined 13-0 without conceding. The two defeats came away at Kansas and at Colorado, with a 2-2 draw against Michigan in between.

Ellie Hendrix and Samantha Sellers sit just behind Diamond on the scoring chart with nine points each, and Capriel Winder leads the team with six assists, so this is not a one-player attack. It is, though, an attack that Diamond currently tops.

What comes next

Utah State hosts an unbeaten Saint Mary's side at Chuck and Gloria Bell Field on September 20 at 1 p.m., closing non-conference play before the Aggies begin their first Pac-12 campaign.

Diamond is a senior with a full conference season and a postseason still in front of her.
