Westminster Griffins Athletics: The 13 NCAA Division II Teams on One Salt Lake City Campus

Westminster University's athletics website and university athletics page list 13 NCAA Division II teams, all competing in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) from Salt Lake City. The university dates its intercollegiate athletics program to 1928.

Among the 11 Utah colleges Beehive Athletes covers, Westminster is the only NCAA Division II program. The rest compete in NCAA Division I or NJCAA Division I, as the state's college division guide lays out.

How many NCAA teams does Westminster have?

Thirteen, according to the university's athletics page and the programs its athletics website lists for 2026-27: six men's teams and seven women's teams. The university's 2026-27 academic catalog gives a different figure, 15, because it also counts men's and women's alpine skiing. The section below explains that difference.

Is alpine skiing an NCAA sport at Westminster?

It was through the 2025-26 season. Westminster's men's and women's alpine ski teams raced slalom and giant slalom in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association (RMISA), which lists Westminster as a full NCAA member. Three Griffins qualified for the 2026 NCAA Skiing Championships and raced two days of alpine events at Utah Olympic Park in Park City in March. Guro Hestad Vognild placed fourth in the women's giant slalom and earned First-Team All-American honors, according to the official recap.

What is not yet confirmed is the 2026-27 season. As of September 22, 2026, the athletics website does not list alpine skiing among its sports, the most recent alpine rosters are labelled 2025-26, and the alpine schedule archive offers no 2026-27 season. The 2026-27 catalog still includes alpine in its count of 15. Westminster has not announced alpine's 2026-27 status either way, so the count here follows the athletics department's current list of 13.

What division and conference is Westminster in?

Westminster is an NCAA Division II member of the RMAC. The university credits its programs with nine RMAC regular-season championships and 17 NCAA championship appearances.

The same university page also credits Westminster with 22 Frontier Conference regular-season championships.

When did Westminster join the RMAC?

Twice. Westminster was an RMAC member from 1967 to 1979, according to the RMAC's 2015 announcement of Westminster's Division II approval. Westminster moved to the RMAC from the NAIA and the Frontier Conference, and Westminster Athletics' history page records NAIA and Frontier Conference results from 2001 through 2015.

The return began on August 4, 2015, when Westminster was approved to start the NCAA Division II membership process. It played an RMAC schedule as a provisional member for three seasons, 2015-16 through 2017-18, without eligibility for NCAA postseason play or for RMAC championships that carry an automatic NCAA bid. On June 13, 2018, Westminster became an active Division II member, and from September 1, 2018, its teams were eligible for RMAC and NCAA championships. Club teams outside the NCAA

Westminster's men's and women's snowboard and freeski teams are coached club teams. They compete in the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA), not the NCAA. Climbing is the third coached, university-funded club.

Student-led clubs, funded mainly by student dues, currently include free-ride ski and snowboard, mountain biking, climbing and indoor soccer.

Where do the Griffins play?

Dumke Field is home to men's and women's soccer and men's and women's lacrosse. The site opened as Dane Hansen Stadium on October 2, 1949. In fall 2005 it was rebuilt as a two-level parking structure with an artificial-turf field on top. It seats 1,200, and LED lighting was installed in September 2020.

Behnken Field House is part of an 84,500-square-foot health, wellness and athletic center completed in 2006 that houses Griffin Athletics. The field house holds 1,200 spectators beneath a suspended running track.

Sugar House Park is a 110.5-acre park on the site of the old state prison. The Griffins hosted cross country teams from Utah, Colorado and Idaho there for 5K races on September 10, 2026.

Glenmoor Golf Course in South Jordan hosted women's golf's home tournament, the Westminster Wasatch Invitational presented by Canyon View Credit Union, on September 20-21, 2026.

How has fall 2026 started?

• Women's golf was picked second in the RMAC preseason coaches' poll, two points behind CSU Pueblo. The Griffins tied for second of 12 at the Travis Roy Memorial in Sheridan, Wyoming, then finished third of 14 at their home event. All eight golfers on the 2026-27 roster list Utah hometowns.
• Women's volleyball lost in three sets at UCCS on September 18 and at No. 19 MSU Denver on September 19. Its next road trip is Western Colorado on September 25 and Colorado Mesa on September 26.
• Men's golf finished third of 12 at its season opener in Sheridan at 9-over 873. Hayden Howell tied for fourth at 1-under.
• Men's cross country was led at the Sugar House Park home meet by Joaquin Stultz, sixth in 16:03.18.
• Women's soccer played back-to-back scoreless draws in Colorado, at MSU Denver on September 18 and at Colorado Christian on September 20.
• Men's soccer was scheduled for two home matches at Dumke Field that week: No. 13 CSU Pueblo on September 24 and No. 2 UCCS on September 27.
